How long does a GP consultation take to work for Crohn's disease?

The GP may ask about diarrhoea, abdominal pain, blood or mucus in stool, weight change, fever, appetite, tiredness, and symptoms around the anus. They may check hydration and your abdomen, arrange blood or stool tests, review current medicines, and coordinate gastroenterology care. Symptoms can reflect active inflammation, infection, a medicine effect, or another problem, so the plan depends on the findings. Improvement may take time after treatment is adjusted, and a single visit cannot predict the full course.

Take medicines according to the prescribed schedule and do not stop steroids or other treatment suddenly without medical advice. Drink regularly, note stool frequency and visible blood, and record pain, fever, food tolerance, and weight changes. Keep arranged blood, stool, imaging, or specialist appointments. Contact the practice if the plan is unclear or symptoms continue to interfere with eating, drinking, sleep, or daily activities.

Seek urgent help for severe or steadily worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen with vomiting, heavy rectal bleeding, fainting, marked weakness, high fever with deterioration, or inability to keep fluids down. These signs can indicate dehydration, significant bleeding, obstruction, or another complication and need prompt assessment.

Ask which tests are needed, when treatment should be reviewed, what improvement should look like, and who to contact during a flare. Tell the GP about recent antibiotics, travel, pregnancy, previous surgery, and all prescribed or over-the-counter medicines.
