How long does a GP consultation take to work for chickenpox?

The GP can review the rash, ask about fever and general symptoms, and decide whether the pattern fits chickenpox or needs another explanation. Advice may focus on fluids, itch relief, skin care and avoiding spread. Some people need closer assessment because of age, pregnancy, a weakened immune system or severe symptoms. The appointment helps identify those needs; it is different from a medicine that works instantly.

Before the appointment, note when the rash began, how it has changed and whether fever or breathing symptoms are present. Follow the GP’s instructions, keep nails short, avoid scratching and use only recommended medicines. Stay away from people at higher risk until a clinician confirms it is safe to return. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, severe drowsiness, confusion, dehydration, repeated vomiting, a rapidly worsening rash, or skin that becomes very painful, hot or produces pus. Contact a clinician promptly if chickenpox is suspected during pregnancy or in someone with reduced immunity. Do not wait for a routine appointment when a child is difficult to wake or appears seriously unwell.
