How long does GP consultation take to work for allergic rhinitis?

The GP may assess sneezing, an itchy or blocked nose, watery eyes, triggers and how symptoms affect sleep. Treatment can include avoiding a trigger, a nasal spray, an antihistamine or another option. Some medicines act sooner, while nasal treatments may need regular use before their full benefit is clear.

Relief can be slower when exposure continues, the nose is very inflamed, or the symptoms have been present for a long time. Correct technique matters: a nasal spray aimed away from the middle wall of the nose is less likely to irritate it.

Use the recommended treatment consistently and follow the device instructions. Reduce contact with known triggers where practical, wash your face or change clothes after heavy outdoor exposure, and keep windows closed when that helps your symptoms. Do not combine products or use a decongestant spray for prolonged periods without clinical advice.

Record congestion, sneezing, eye symptoms, sleep and treatment use. If there is little improvement after the agreed trial, ask the practice to review the diagnosis, technique or treatment choice.

Call emergency services for sudden swelling of the face, lips or tongue, severe wheezing, breathing difficulty, faintness or rapidly worsening symptoms after an exposure. Arrange prompt review for one-sided persistent blockage, recurrent nosebleeds, severe facial pain, fever, or symptoms that affect breathing or sleep despite treatment.

Ask how to use your nasal spray, when to expect a response, how long to continue it, and which triggers are most relevant. Ask whether asthma, sinus disease or another cause should be considered if your nose and eye symptoms do not improve.
