Short answer

A GP consultation begins assessment immediately, but treatment does not remove acute bronchitis at once; cough and airway irritation can take several weeks to settle.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Consultation benefit
Assesses breathing and checks for conditions needing different care.
Expected course
Airway irritation and cough can last for several weeks.
Avoid
Smoking, smoky air and unprescribed antibiotics.

Why the cough may linger

Acute bronchitis usually involves temporary inflammation of the breathing tubes. A GP may listen to your chest, review breathing symptoms and decide whether you need supportive care, a prescription, or assessment for another infection. A lingering cough does not by itself show that the consultation failed.

Mucus, chest discomfort and tiredness may improve at different speeds. Antibiotics are not useful for every cause of bronchitis, so do not use leftover medicine or someone else’s prescription. The clinician’s findings and your overall health guide the plan.

Caring for yourself

Rest, drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration, and avoid smoking and smoky air. Use only recommended medicines and check before combining cough products with other treatments. Note changes in breathing, fever, chest pain and the cough’s pattern so you can describe them clearly if a review is needed.

Follow the consultation advice and contact the practice if symptoms are worsening, new symptoms appear, or the cough is not following the expected course. People with asthma, chronic lung disease, frailty or reduced immunity may need earlier review.

When to seek urgent help

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, or inability to speak in full sentences. Seek prompt assessment for coughing blood, chest pain, dehydration, a high or persistent fever, or a cough that is worsening rather than easing. These signs can point to pneumonia or another condition.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what your chest examination suggests, which symptoms should improve first, how to manage the cough, and when a review is needed. Ask whether inhalers, testing or treatment for another condition is appropriate for your medical history.
