How long does genomic tumour profiling take to work for breast cancer?

The team first checks whether a suitable tumour sample is available, often from a previous biopsy or operation. The laboratory extracts tumour material and examines selected genetic or molecular features. The report may identify changes that help classify the tumour or suggest treatments to discuss. It may also be inconclusive, especially when the sample contains too little tumour material or the findings do not point to a clear option. The result is interpreted alongside hormone-receptor status, HER2 findings, stage, previous treatment and your general health. Profiling does not replace the pathology report or clinical assessment.

Ask whether your existing tissue can be used and whether a new biopsy is needed. Confirm which question the test is intended to answer and how the result could affect treatment choices. Tell the team about medicines, allergies and any treatment deadlines already discussed. Keep your appointment for the results even if the report is available through a portal, because a molecular finding may need careful explanation. Ask whether treatment can begin before profiling is complete and what information would trigger a change in the plan.

Contact your cancer team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, severe pain, confusion, uncontrolled vomiting, fever or a sudden change in your ability to function. These symptoms need assessment independently of the profiling timeline. Do not delay urgent help while waiting for a report.
