How long does genetic counselling take to work for Lynch syndrome?

Counselling first reviews your cancer history and the history of relatives, especially bowel and womb cancers and the ages at which they were diagnosed. The counsellor may review tumour testing already performed, such as mismatch repair or microsatellite findings, before discussing an inherited test. If testing is chosen, a blood or saliva sample is sent to a laboratory, and the result is discussed separately. Results can support, reduce or leave uncertainty about a suspected inherited risk. Counselling provides information and planning; it does not itself prevent cancer or replace clinical care.

Write down relatives' diagnoses, approximate ages and which side of the family they belong to. Bring reports from any tumour or genetic testing, along with your medicines and questions about screening. Ask when the sample will be collected, how results will be communicated and what each possible result could mean for bowel or other cancer surveillance. If an inherited change is found, ask whether relatives may benefit from their own counselling and testing. Keep copies of reports so future clinicians can use the same information.

Seek prompt medical advice for blood in the stool, a persistent change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss, new abdominal pain or unusual vaginal bleeding. Do not wait for a counselling appointment to have these symptoms assessed. If you have a current cancer diagnosis, tell your oncology team about a suspected Lynch syndrome history because inherited-risk information may affect the wider care plan.
