The first session usually covers your personal cancer history, relatives' diagnoses and the pattern that prompted referral. The counsellor can explain whether genetic testing may help, what a result could mean for you and how it might affect relatives. A laboratory result is a separate stage after a decision to test; its timing depends on the test, the sample and the laboratory. A result may be clear, uncertain or show an inherited change associated with Li-Fraumeni syndrome. The appointment itself is not a treatment and does not remove cancer risk.

Gather cancer diagnoses, approximate ages at diagnosis and available medical records from close relatives. Bring previous genetic reports, pathology information and a list of current medicines. Ask how testing could change screening or preventive care, whether a blood or saliva sample is suitable, and when results will be discussed. After the result, keep the written report and share it with the clinicians involved in your care. A confirmed inherited finding may lead to a personalised surveillance plan for you and a discussion about testing relatives.

Do not wait for genetic counselling if you have a new lump, unexplained bleeding, persistent pain, a changing mole or another new symptom that concerns you.
