How long does fracture fixation surgery take to work for a scaphoid fracture?

The scaphoid has a compact shape and parts of it have a limited blood supply. A screw or other fixation device keeps the fragments positioned while new bone forms. Pain may settle before imaging shows complete union, so feeling better is not permission to lift, grip or lean through the hand. The fracture location, displacement, smoking, bone health and whether a graft was needed can all influence the plan. Stiffness in the wrist or thumb is also common after immobilisation.

Wear the splint or cast for the period advised and keep it protected during washing. Avoid pushing up from a chair, heavy gripping, cycling and falls onto the hand until cleared. Elevate the wrist for swelling and keep the fingers moving if instructed. Attend imaging and wound reviews; the surgeon may use scans before allowing unrestricted use. Physiotherapy should begin at the stage recommended, with gentle range-of-motion work followed by progressive grip and wrist strength.

Contact the surgical team promptly if pain or swelling is worsening, the cast becomes tight or wet, the incision opens, or there is drainage, spreading redness or fever. Numbness, persistent pins and needles, pale or blue fingers, or inability to move the fingers needs urgent advice. A new fall or forceful twist should be reported even if the wrist initially feels manageable.

Ask where the fracture sits in the scaphoid, what imaging will confirm union, and which hand movements are restricted. Find out when driving, work, lifting and sport may restart, and whether a bone graft or extended immobilisation is part of your plan.
