Screws, pins, plates or wires hold the broken area in a suitable position so the growth plate and nearby bone can heal. Early progress may mean less swelling and better comfort, but these changes do not prove that the fracture is fully united. Follow-up examination and imaging help the surgeon check alignment and healing. Because a growth plate influences future bone length and shape, monitoring may continue after the cast or protection is removed. The child or teenager may need restricted weight-bearing or a brace before normal movement returns.

Keep the dressing, cast or splint dry and follow the prescribed activity limits. Do not allow running, jumping or contact play until the orthopaedic team confirms that the repair is ready. Elevate the limb when swelling is prominent, use medicines only as directed, and attend imaging appointments. Once cleared, gentle movement and physiotherapy can address stiffness and rebuild strength without overloading the healing area. Ask how the uninjured side should be used for comparison during recovery.

Seek prompt medical advice for worsening pain, a tight or damaged cast, increasing swelling, numbness, tingling, pale or blue fingers or toes, fever, drainage, or a wound that becomes increasingly red. Sudden inability to move the limb, severe pain after a new injury, or a cold limb needs urgent assessment.
