How long does fracture fixation surgery take to work for an AC joint injury?

The operation uses hardware or a stabilising repair to hold injured structures in position while they heal. It does not make the shoulder ready for unrestricted use on the day of surgery. Early soreness and swelling are expected, and a sling may protect the repair. Later progress depends on the injury pattern, the repair used, tissue healing, and how movement and strengthening are introduced.

Use the sling and medicines exactly as directed, keep the wound clean, and avoid lifting, reaching overhead, pushing, or pulling until cleared. Begin elbow, wrist, and hand movement if instructed so the arm does not become unnecessarily stiff. Shoulder exercises should follow the prescribed sequence; adding resistance too early can strain the repair. Keep scheduled reviews so the clinician can assess the wound, alignment, and movement.

Seek prompt medical advice for increasing redness, drainage, fever, wound opening, or pain that is worsening rather than settling. Urgent assessment is needed for new numbness or weakness in the arm, a hand that becomes cold or discoloured, chest symptoms, or sudden swelling and severe pain after a fall or forceful movement.
