How long does fracture casting take to work for a scaphoid fracture?

The cast limits wrist and thumb movement so the broken scaphoid is less likely to shift. Reduced pain does not prove that the fracture has united. Blood supply to parts of this small wrist bone can be limited, so healing may take longer than a simple injury elsewhere. Your clinician may use repeat X-rays or another scan to decide whether the bone is healing well enough for the cast to come off or for movement to increase.

Keep the cast dry and intact, support the hand when swelling is present, and move the fingers that are free unless your care team has given different instructions. Avoid lifting, gripping, pushing, or using the injured wrist to brace a fall. Do not place objects inside the cast to scratch. Attend every review, even if the wrist feels better, because protection may need to continue until examination and imaging support a change.

Contact the treating service promptly if the cast becomes loose, cracked, wet inside, or painful at one spot. Seek urgent help for fingers that become blue, cold, numb, increasingly swollen, or difficult to move, or for pain that rises despite elevation and prescribed treatment. Fever, drainage, or a bad smell from beneath the cast also needs assessment.

Ask which part of the scaphoid is fractured, what imaging will confirm union, when hand and wrist movement may begin, and which activities remain restricted between appointments.
