How long does fracture casting take to work for a distal radius fracture?

The distal radius is the end of the forearm bone next to the wrist. A cast limits wrist and forearm movement so the broken pieces can remain aligned while healing occurs. Swelling may change during the first part of recovery, so the cast and circulation need review. If the fracture shifts, involves the joint or cannot be held comfortably, the clinician may discuss a different support or another treatment. Healing on an X-ray and comfortable function are related but not identical milestones.

Keep the hand elevated when advised and move the fingers regularly if your care team permits it. Keep the cast dry, avoid lifting with the injured arm and do not use objects inside the cast. Follow instructions about the sling and any permitted elbow or shoulder movement. Attend imaging appointments, because alignment can change even when discomfort is easing. After cast removal, stiffness and reduced grip may need guided exercises rather than forceful stretching.

Seek urgent advice for increasing pain, severe swelling, numbness, new pins and needles, pale or blue fingers, cold fingers or difficulty moving them. A wet, broken or excessively loose cast also needs review. Fever, drainage or worsening skin pain may indicate a cast or wound problem.

Ask when your next X-ray is due, whether the fracture is stable, when you may use the hand for light tasks, and which movements are allowed before cast removal. Ask how grip and wrist motion will be rebuilt afterward.
