How long does fracture casting take to work for an ankle fracture?

Casting limits movement so the broken ankle can heal in a suitable position. It can reduce pain by supporting the injured area, although swelling and tenderness may remain early on. A stable fracture may be managed in a cast, while displacement, joint involvement or swelling can change the plan. Follow-up examination and X-rays help the clinician decide whether the cast remains suitable, needs adjustment or should be replaced with another form of support.

Keep the cast dry and do not insert objects inside it to scratch the skin. Rest and elevate the leg as instructed, and use crutches or another aid until weight bearing is permitted. Move the toes gently if advised, and attend scheduled checks even when pain improves. Do not alter the cast or walk on it without clearance. After removal, stiffness, weakness and swelling are common reasons for a gradual rehabilitation plan.

Get urgent advice for worsening pain or swelling, numbness, pins and needles, blue or unusually cold toes, inability to move the toes, or a cast that feels dangerously tight. Contact the care team for a cracked, wet, loose or foul-smelling cast, fever, or increasing skin irritation.

Ask whether your fracture is stable, when you may place weight on the ankle, when imaging will be repeated, and what support follows cast removal. Clarify which exercises are safe while the cast is on.
