The raised or firm nodule is taken out at surgery, so the treatment has acted immediately on the removed tissue. Early redness, swelling, tenderness, or a tight feeling around the wound does not mean the procedure has failed. These changes usually reflect normal repair. The final appearance depends on the wound location, its size, how the edges were closed, and your own scar response. A pathology examination may also be used to confirm what was removed.

Follow the dressing and wound-care instructions given by your clinician. Keep the area protected and avoid stretching or rubbing it until you are told that normal activity is suitable. Do not pick at a scab or remove a suture yourself. Attend the planned wound check or suture-removal visit, and ask when scar care such as silicone or gentle massage is appropriate. Protecting a healing scar from strong sunlight can help limit lasting colour change.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain, warmth, redness, or swelling is increasing rather than easing, or if the wound opens, bleeds repeatedly, or produces pus.
