How long does an epidural steroid injection take to work for spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis means there is less space around structures in the spine. Narrowing can irritate or compress nerves, causing back or leg pain, tingling, heaviness, or weakness, sometimes worse with standing or walking. The injection targets inflammation around a nerve; it does not widen the spinal canal. This is why symptom relief may be incomplete or may fade when activity increases.

Early numbness can make movement feel easier without showing the final result. Compare walking distance, standing tolerance, leg symptoms, and recovery after activity over the days that follow. Tell your clinician about any change in strength, not only your pain score.

Follow the post-procedure instructions and avoid driving or unsafe tasks while sensation or strength is altered. Keep activity gentle at first, then use the rehabilitation plan given by your clinician. Break up prolonged standing, use an advised support if needed, and stop an exercise that causes spreading numbness or increasing weakness.

Contact emergency services or seek urgent care for rapidly worsening weakness, inability to walk, new bladder or bowel difficulty, numbness around the inner thighs or groin, fever, or increasing redness and drainage where the injection was given. A severe post-procedure headache that worsens while upright also needs prompt assessment.

Ask which symptoms the injection is expected to improve, how long the trial period is, what walking or strengthening work is safe, and what the next assessment will be if your function does not improve.
