How long does an endometrial biopsy take to work for endometrial hyperplasia?

Short answer
An endometrial biopsy samples the womb lining during the procedure, while laboratory analysis determines whether hyperplasia is present and what care may be needed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose of biopsy
- It provides womb-lining tissue for laboratory assessment.
- What guides treatment
- The tissue report is considered with symptoms and personal circumstances.
How biopsy helps with hyperplasia
Endometrial hyperplasia means the womb lining has become thicker or has developed an unusual pattern of cells. A biopsy gives the laboratory tissue to examine, helping distinguish a benign overgrowth from changes that need closer treatment or surveillance. An ultrasound can suggest a thickened lining, but tissue assessment gives different information.
The report may comment on whether atypical cells are present. Your clinician interprets that finding with your bleeding pattern, age, medicines, hormonal history, and plans for pregnancy where relevant. A result does not automatically mean cancer, and a normal result may not explain every episode of bleeding.
What to do after sampling
Follow the clinic’s instructions about activity, pain relief, and vaginal products. Note bleeding and cramps, and ask when the result will be shared. Depending on the report, care may include hormonal treatment, repeat sampling, monitoring, or referral for another discussion.
Take prescribed treatment as directed and attend follow-up even if bleeding settles. Tell the clinician about medicines such as hormonal therapy or blood thinners, because they can affect the assessment and care plan.
When to seek care urgently
Contact a clinician promptly for bleeding that is heavy or worsening, severe pelvic pain, fever, chills, faintness, or unpleasant-smelling discharge after the biopsy. These symptoms can indicate a complication that needs timely assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the report shows hyperplasia with or without atypical cells, when treatment should begin, whether repeat sampling is needed, how fertility plans affect choices, and which symptoms need urgent help.
Questions people ask
Can a biopsy make hyperplasia go away?
No. The biopsy is a sampling test; treatment is considered after the result and clinical context are reviewed.
Does hyperplasia mean I have womb cancer?
Not necessarily. The biopsy helps identify the type of lining change and whether further care is needed.
