How long does emollient therapy take to work for pityriasis alba?

Pityriasis alba causes pale, dry, sometimes slightly scaly patches, often on a child’s face. The moisturiser helps repair the skin barrier and soften scale, but it does not instantly restore pigment. The patch can remain visible after the roughness and itch have settled, especially when surrounding skin becomes darker with sun exposure. This difference does not mean the emollient has failed. A new or changing patch still needs a proper diagnosis because several skin conditions can look pale.

Apply a fragrance-free emollient gently after washing and whenever the area feels dry. Avoid rubbing or peeling the scale, and use shade, clothing, and child-appropriate sun protection to reduce contrast between the patch and nearby skin.
