How long does emollient therapy take to work for epidermolysis bullosa?

Epidermolysis bullosa makes skin prone to blistering or tearing after minor friction. An emollient can moisturise dry surrounding skin and sometimes make dressing changes more comfortable, but it does not repair the inherited cause or guarantee that new blisters will stop. Broken skin, body location, infection and the person's EB type all affect how quickly an area settles.

Use only the emollient and application method included in the person's EB care plan. Apply with minimal rubbing to intact or specifically approved skin, and follow the team's instructions for open wounds and dressings. Choose soft clothing, protect pressure points and avoid adhesive products unless the specialist team has approved them. Contact the EB team promptly for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, bad smell, spreading redness, fever, reduced drinking or a wound that is not progressing as expected. Urgent help is needed for breathing or swallowing difficulty, severe dehydration or rapidly worsening illness.
