How long does emollient therapy take to work for cradle cap?

Cradle cap causes greasy or dry-looking scales on an infant's scalp. An emollient softens the scale so it can lift during gentle washing; it does not mean every flake should be removed at once. The scalp may look better in stages, and mild flaking can return. Cradle cap is different from a painful, weeping or rapidly spreading rash.

Use only a product recommended for your baby's age and apply a small amount as directed. Leave it for the advised time, then wash the hair and loosen softened scale with a soft baby brush or cloth. Never scratch, pick or pull attached scale, and keep product away from the eyes. Stop if the scalp becomes irritated. See Emollient Therapy for general information about moisturising treatment.

Contact your baby's clinician if the scalp is very red, swollen, sore, bleeding, crusted with fluid or has an unpleasant smell. Arrange a review if the rash spreads beyond the scalp, affects the baby's comfort, or does not improve with gentle care.
