Contact dermatitis follows skin exposure to an irritant or allergen. An emollient supports the damaged barrier and makes dry skin more comfortable, yet ongoing contact can keep the reaction active. The substance may be in soap, disinfectant, gloves, cosmetics, hair products, metals or workplace materials. Redness and itch can outlast exposure, so early comfort does not prove the reaction has ended.

Apply a bland emollient to clean, gently dried skin and repeat as directed. Avoid suspected products until a clinician helps clarify the trigger; do not test a potentially allergenic product on inflamed skin. Use protection suited to the exposure, wash off irritants promptly with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, then moisturise. Follow prescribed treatment if inflammation remains active.
