How long does emollient therapy take to work for brittle nail syndrome?

Emollients improve flexibility and reduce water loss from the nail plate and surrounding skin. They cannot instantly replace nail that has already split or peeled. The damaged portion must grow forward and be trimmed away, so progress is easier to see at the nail edge than at the base. Repeated hand washing, detergents, solvents, nail polish remover and picking can keep undoing the benefit.

Massage the recommended emollient into nails, cuticles and nearby skin after washing and whenever they feel dry. Wear protective gloves for wet tasks, change damp gloves and dry hands carefully. Keep nails short, file snags smoothly and avoid cutting or pushing back cuticles. Do not rely on moisturising alone if several nails change suddenly or a nail is painful.

Arrange a dermatology review if splitting continues despite protection, or if many nails change. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, swelling, pus, marked tenderness, a dark new streak or a nail lifting from its bed. These findings can have causes that moisturising alone will not address.

Ask whether dryness, repeated exposure, a skin condition or another nail disorder is contributing. Confirm which emollient is suitable, whether protection would help, and what signs should prompt testing or follow-up.
