How long does diabetes screening take to work for peripheral neuropathy?

Screening may show whether high blood glucose could be contributing to nerve problems or whether diabetes needs further assessment. Peripheral neuropathy can cause burning, tingling, numbness or reduced sensation, commonly in the feet. A clinician may also check reflexes, strength, walking, skin and circulation. A normal screening result does not explain every cause of neuropathy, and an abnormal result does not by itself confirm that nerve damage is present.

Keep a note of where symptoms occur, when they started and whether they change with activity or at night. Protect numb feet from heat, sharp objects and poorly fitting shoes, because reduced sensation can hide an injury. Your clinician may discuss glucose management and other possible contributors.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, rapidly worsening numbness, a serious foot wound, or a foot that becomes cold, pale or blue. Prompt review is also sensible for burning pain that prevents sleep or repeated trips and falls. These warning signs need assessment rather than waiting for routine screening.
