De Quervain's tenosynovitis affects the tendons that move the thumb along the wrist side. Release surgery opens the tight covering around those tendons so they can glide with less restriction. The incision still needs to heal, and the surrounding tissues may remain tender or swollen for a while. Pain from the original tendon crowding may improve before pinch strength, wrist movement, and confidence with lifting return. A temporary numb patch near the scar can also be discussed at follow-up.

Keep the dressing and wound care exactly as instructed, and protect the hand from forceful gripping until the surgical team allows it. Elevate the hand when swelling is noticeable and move the fingers regularly if advised. Do not use pain reduction as a reason to lift heavily or repeatedly test the thumb. A hand therapist may guide scar care, thumb motion, and progressive strengthening once the wound is ready. Return to driving, work, sport, and childcare should reflect control of the hand and the restrictions from your surgeon.

Seek urgent help for a cold or discoloured hand, new marked weakness, or rapidly worsening numbness.
