How long do custom orthotics take to work for hallux rigidus?

Hallux rigidus limits movement at the big-toe joint and can make push-off painful. An orthotic may reduce pressure under the joint or help limit uncomfortable motion, depending on its design. Relief may be clearest in walking or standing before it is noticeable during faster activities. It cannot restore worn cartilage, so ongoing stiffness does not necessarily mean the fitting has failed.

Follow the prescribed break-in schedule and choose shoes with a firm, roomy sole that does not force the toe to bend. Test the orthotics during ordinary walks before demanding activities. Keep track of push-off pain, shoe comfort, and next-day soreness. Contact the fitter if the device presses on the toe joint, causes numbness, or changes your walking pattern.
