How long do custom orthotics take to work for bunions?

A bunion changes the shape and loading pattern of the front of the foot. An orthotic may support the foot and spread pressure more comfortably, especially when combined with roomy footwear. Relief is often noticed during particular activities before it is consistent throughout the day. The device manages forces; it does not straighten the joint or reverse the bony prominence.

Wear the orthotics for short periods at first and increase use according to the fitting plan. Pair them with shoes that have a wide, comfortable toe box and avoid testing them during a long day immediately. Check the skin over the bunion for redness or rubbing, and record which shoes and activities feel better. Ask for an adjustment if the device pushes against the bump.
