Dermatosis papulosa nigra, or DPN, consists of small dark bumps that often appear on the face, neck, or upper body. Curettage removes the selected bump and cautery treats the base or controls bleeding. A treated point may be red, darker, crusted, or mildly swollen before the surface closes.

The bump may look improved once it is removed, but the final appearance is judged after the wound and surrounding colour settle. Temporary lightening or darkening can be more noticeable in deeper skin tones. New DPN bumps can appear separately, because removing one bump does not prevent others from developing.

Use the dressing and cleansing routine provided by the clinician. Avoid picking crusts, rubbing the area, or applying strong exfoliants and fragranced products until the skin has closed. Protect the treated skin from sunlight as advised, since ultraviolet exposure can deepen temporary darkening.
