How long does covid virus last on surfaces?

Virus particles can be deposited when an infected person coughs, sneezes or touches an object. A smooth, non-porous surface may retain contamination differently from fabric or paper, and a cool, shaded, damp setting can behave differently from a warm, dry, sunlit one. The presence of virus on an object does not by itself prove that touching it will cause infection.

COVID-19 spreads mainly through breathing shared air, especially indoors and around someone who is infected. Surface cleaning is useful, but it should sit alongside ventilation, hand hygiene and staying away from others when unwell.

Clean frequently touched items such as door handles, taps, phones and tables when someone is ill or has recently been in the space. Use soap and water where suitable, or a household disinfectant according to its label. Wash hands after cleaning, before eating and after touching shared objects; avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Never mix cleaning products, and keep them away from children.

A surface cannot tell you whether you are infected.
