How long does cortisone injection take to work for heel spur?

A heel spur is a bony growth, while pain can come from irritated soft tissues around the heel. Cortisone may calm that local irritation; it does not remove the bony growth. The effect therefore depends on whether the spur is actually the main pain source and on the pressure placed on the heel each day.

The heel can be tender after the procedure, and the first steps may remain uncomfortable even as inflammation settles. Improvement is better judged by walking distance, morning steps, and shoe tolerance than by one isolated moment.

Follow your clinician’s instructions about rest after the injection. Avoid sudden increases in walking, running, or jumping while the heel is sore. Supportive footwear, a cushioned insole if recommended, and gradual calf or foot exercises can reduce repeated load; use only measures suited to your assessment.

Keep a simple note of when pain occurs, such as on first steps or after standing.
