How long does a cortisone injection take to work for biceps tendinitis?

Short answer
A cortisone injection may reduce pain from biceps tendinitis within days, but tendon recovery depends on gradual activity changes and rehabilitation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible onset
- Pain relief may begin within days
- Load
- Heavy lifting should wait for clearance
- Recovery
- Usually includes graded rehabilitation
How the response develops
The medicine is placed near the painful biceps tendon area to reduce local inflammation and pain sensitivity. If a numbing medicine is included, the shoulder may feel better briefly before the longer effect develops over the next several days. Reduced pain does not prove that the tendon is ready for heavy lifting. Biceps tendinitis can involve irritation where the tendon runs at the front of the shoulder, and other shoulder problems can produce similar symptoms. Your clinician uses the examination to guide the injection site and diagnosis.
Protect the shoulder while it settles
Follow the advised rest period and avoid heavy curls, overhead lifting, pulling, or repetitive reaching until your clinician permits them. Keep gentle shoulder movement within the recommended range so stiffness does not build. Later, a physiotherapist may add progressive exercises for the rotator cuff, shoulder blade, and biceps. Return to sport or work in stages, using pain and strength as guides rather than testing the shoulder suddenly.
When to contact a clinician
Seek prompt advice for worsening shoulder pain, spreading redness, warmth, drainage, fever, or marked swelling after the injection. Sudden weakness, a new bulge in the upper arm, a snapping injury, or inability to lift the arm needs assessment because it may reflect tendon damage or another shoulder injury. Severe symptoms should not be managed by simply repeating activity.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the injection is near the tendon or into the shoulder joint, when you should judge the result, and which movements are restricted. Discuss physiotherapy timing, work and sport modifications, and what symptoms would suggest a rotator cuff or tendon tear.

Questions people ask
Does less pain mean the biceps tendon is healed?
No. Pain can settle before the tendon has recovered, so activity still needs to increase gradually.
What if the injection does not help?
Arrange review so the diagnosis, injection location, shoulder mechanics, and rehabilitation plan can be reassessed.
