How long does combined pill take to work for endometriosis?

Endometriosis can cause pelvic pain, painful periods and pain with sex when tissue similar to the womb lining responds to hormonal changes. The combined pill supplies oestrogen and progestogen in a prescribed pattern. By changing the menstrual cycle, it may reduce bleeding and the hormonal fluctuations that aggravate symptoms.

Some people notice change during the first cycles, while others need a longer trial or a different schedule. The pill controls symptoms; it does not remove endometriosis lesions. Improvement in bleeding may occur on a different timetable from improvement in pain.

Take the pill exactly as prescribed and record pain, bleeding, bowel or bladder symptoms, and missed activities. This record gives your clinician something concrete to review after the first few cycles. If you miss tablets, vomit, develop diarrhoea, or take another medicine, check the instructions for what to do next and whether extra contraception is needed.

Do not stop because symptoms have not changed after a few days. Arrange a review if pain remains disruptive, side effects are difficult, or you want to change to continuous use or another treatment.
