How long does bowel resection take to work for familial adenomatous polyposis?

Familial adenomatous polyposis causes a continuing tendency to form many bowel polyps. Surgery removes the bowel section chosen by the team and may change how stool passes, depending on the reconstruction. It does not remove the inherited tendency, so surveillance remains part of care. The bowel needs time to heal and settle into a new pattern. Your surgeon and genetics or specialist team use follow-up examinations to monitor the remaining bowel and any reconstructed area.

Follow the plan for food, fluids, wound care, medicines, and gentle movement. Record bowel frequency, urgency, pain, bleeding, and hydration concerns. Keep surgical, gastroenterology, and genetics appointments, even when you feel recovered. Ask which parts of the bowel need future checks and what symptoms should be reported between visits.

Tell the surgical team about persistent vomiting, worsening abdominal swelling, increasing pain, wound discharge, fever, or inability to drink. Get urgent help for fainting, severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, or sudden deterioration. FAP follow-up does not replace prompt assessment of a new surgical problem.

Ask what reconstruction is planned, how bowel function may change, which symptoms suggest dehydration or obstruction, when surveillance resumes, and whether relatives should receive genetic counselling.
