The operation deals with the part of the bowel identified for removal; it does not make the whole body recover at once. Your bowel may take time to restart, and eating, drinking, movement, and bowel patterns are increased step by step. The tissue removed is examined, and that information helps the team confirm the cancer features, whether the edges of the removed tissue are clear, and whether further treatment should be considered. Follow instructions about wound care, pain relief, food, fluids, and walking. Take short walks as advised and protect the incision from strain. Keep track of bowel movements, abdominal swelling, nausea, temperature, and wound changes. Attend the surgical follow-up and any oncology appointment, because recovery progress and tissue results are reviewed together.

Contact your surgical team for increasing abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, wound redness or discharge, or a fever. Seek urgent help for collapse, severe pain, heavy bleeding, or inability to keep fluids down. These signs can need assessment before a routine review.
