Actinic cheilitis is sun-damaged lip tissue that can cause dryness, scaling, roughness, or colour change. CO2 resurfacing removes selected surface tissue and triggers a healing response. Swelling, oozing, crusting, tenderness, and redness may be expected early on, but they should be followed by steady healing. Treatment does not replace examination of suspicious or persistent areas.

Follow the clinician’s instructions for cleansing, ointment, hydration, and pain relief. Do not pull off crusts or use lip scrubs, fragranced products, or unapproved medicines. Protect the lips from sun with a suitable lip sunscreen and physical cover once advised. Keep every follow-up appointment because actinic cheilitis can recur or require further assessment.

Contact the treating team if pain, swelling, redness, or discharge is worsening rather than easing, or if fever develops. Arrange prompt assessment for a persistent ulcer, bleeding area, firm lump, or a patch that fails to heal. Seek emergency help for severe facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
