How long does child health consultation take to work for respiratory syncytial virus infection?

The clinician listens to the chest and checks breathing effort, oxygenation when needed, temperature, alertness and hydration. RSV often begins like a cold and can then cause cough, wheeze or faster breathing, particularly in young babies. The consultation cannot remove the virus instantly, but it can identify whether home care and observation are reasonable or whether the child needs closer support.

Give small, frequent feeds or drinks if coughing makes feeding tiring, clear the nose as advised, and allow quiet rest. Keep smoke and strong fragrances away from the child. Follow the prescribed plan and check breathing, colour, alertness, feeding and wet nappies regularly. Avoid cough medicines or antibiotics unless a clinician specifically recommends them.

Get emergency help if the child is struggling for each breath, has pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, severe chest pulling-in, or is difficult to wake. Seek prompt review if feeds are much smaller, wet nappies decrease, breathing becomes faster or noisier, or the child is getting worse after the consultation.
