What happens in the assessment

The clinician asks how the seizure started, how long it lasted, which movements occurred, how your child behaved afterwards and what fever symptoms were present. They check recovery, breathing, hydration and the likely source of infection. Most children are sleepy or unsettled for a while after a seizure, but the clinician will explain what recovery should look like and whether further assessment is needed.

If another seizure occurs

Place your child on their side on a safe surface, move nearby objects away and note when the seizure starts. Do not restrain them, put anything in their mouth or give food and drink until they are fully alert. Stay with your child and follow any emergency medicine instructions provided by the clinician.

When to seek emergency help

Call emergency services if the seizure lasts longer than the emergency threshold you were given, repeats without full recovery, affects one side, or your child has breathing difficulty, a persistent unresponsive state, stiff neck, severe illness or a concerning rash. Seek urgent assessment after a first seizure or whenever recovery does not follow the plan.
