How long does child health consultation take to work for failure to thrive?

The clinician reviews growth measurements over time, feeding history, appetite, vomiting or diarrhoea, development, energy and family health. They may observe feeding and decide whether further checks or specialist input are needed. A plan might involve feeding support, treating an underlying problem or arranging repeat measurements. One measurement cannot show whether an intervention has worked; the pattern across follow-up is more useful.

Bring details of a typical day of meals or milk, vomiting, stools and activity, along with any previous growth information. Follow the agreed feeding plan without pressuring your child to eat. Record what is practical, and attend scheduled weight or development reviews. Contact the clinician if your child cannot keep fluids down or becomes less responsive.

Seek prompt medical attention for breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, marked drowsiness, severe pain, blood in vomit or stool, or a child who is rapidly becoming weaker. A child with faltering growth who stops feeding needs timely assessment, not simply a later growth check.
