How long does child health consultation take to work for croup?

The clinician considers the sound of the cough, noisy breathing at rest or with crying, breathing effort, voice, hydration and alertness. They also consider how quickly symptoms began and whether your child has had airway problems before. Some children need observation or medicine to reduce airway swelling; others can be monitored at home with clear instructions. Symptoms can be worse at night, so the plan should cover what to do then.

Keep your child calm because crying can make noisy breathing worse. Hold them comfortably upright, offer fluids in small amounts and check them regularly. Follow prescribed treatment instructions exactly. Avoid steam or hot vapour, which can burn a child, and do not force a distressed child to lie down for an examination at home.

Get urgent help if noisy breathing occurs while your child is calm, the skin pulls in between or below the ribs, lips look blue or grey, your child drools or cannot swallow, becomes unusually sleepy, or struggles to speak or drink. Worsening symptoms after a consultation need reassessment rather than waiting for the next day.

Ask whether the noisy breathing is present at rest, which treatment has been prescribed, and how soon it should be reassessed. Ask for a clear emergency plan for nighttime symptoms and advice about fluids.
