How long does child health consultation take to work for colic in babies?

The clinician reviews when the crying happens, feeding, burping, stools, sleep and your baby’s growth. They may look for reflux, illness, feeding difficulty or another explanation rather than assuming every episode is colic. The useful outcome is a tailored plan for soothing, feeding support and follow-up. Colic can fluctuate, so a single calmer evening does not prove that a particular change caused improvement.

Keep a short record of feeds, crying periods, stools, vomiting and wet nappies to share at review. Try one agreed change at a time so you can see how your baby responds. Hold your baby safely, reduce stimulation and take a break if crying feels overwhelming. Never shake a baby; place the baby on their back in a safe cot and get support when you need it.

Seek prompt care if your baby has a fever, trouble breathing, repeated forceful vomiting, green vomit, blood in the stool, a swollen abdomen, poor feeding, fewer wet nappies, unusual sleepiness or a weak cry. Sudden inconsolable crying with a baby who appears unwell deserves assessment, even if a previous consultation suggested colic.
