The interval to a response depends on the extent of disease, the medicines selected, breathing symptoms and your overall condition. Treatment is commonly organised into cycles with time for blood counts and other tissues to recover. Your doctor may assess breathing, cough, pain, weight, examination findings and laboratory results, then compare these with chest imaging. A scan may show shrinkage, stability or growth; symptoms alone cannot establish the result. Treatment goals may include reducing symptoms, controlling cancer or preparing for another treatment.

Report changes in breathlessness, cough, chest discomfort, appetite, sleep and activity rather than waiting for the next scan. Attend blood tests and treatment reviews, and use prescribed anti-sickness or pain medicines as directed. Ask how to manage fatigue and whether activity should be adjusted. Do not stop chemotherapy because you feel no immediate change; the team uses the planned assessment point and may alter treatment if the cancer or side effects call for it.

Call your cancer team urgently for fever or chills, worsening breathlessness, new confusion, coughing blood, uncontrolled vomiting or inability to drink. Use emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, collapse or sudden chest pain. Infection can become serious while blood counts are low, and breathing problems may need assessment without waiting for the next appointment.
