How long does chemotherapy take to work for primary peritoneal cancer?

This cancer affects the lining of the abdomen, so assessment may focus on abdominal swelling, discomfort, appetite, bowel function, breathing and activity. Your team may examine the abdomen, review blood tests and use imaging to compare fluid, thickening or deposits. A tumour marker can sometimes contribute when it has been useful for your care. Treatment may be planned before surgery, after surgery or for disease that has returned, and the review schedule reflects that purpose.

Record changes in abdominal size or pressure, eating, bowel movements, nausea, breathlessness and energy. Report side effects before the next infusion so supportive treatment can be arranged and blood results can be reviewed. Keep all scan and clinic appointments, even if symptoms improve. Ask what the next assessment will involve and how its result will affect surgery, continued chemotherapy or another treatment discussion.

Contact the oncology team promptly for increasing abdominal swelling, persistent vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, inability to drink, fever, new breathlessness or severe abdominal pain. These symptoms can signal infection, dehydration, fluid pressure or bowel complications and need timely review. Call emergency services for collapse, severe breathing difficulty or sudden chest pain.
