How Long Does Chemotherapy Take to Work for Leukaemia?

Leukaemia includes different diseases, and treatment timing depends on the type, disease activity, overall health, and medicines selected. Early treatment may focus on bringing abnormal blood counts under control, followed by further treatment intended to reduce remaining leukaemia cells.

Blood counts and examination findings help show how treatment is affecting the illness and your bone marrow. A bone marrow sample may be used when the team needs a closer response assessment. Feeling better is helpful, but it does not replace these tests.

Attend frequent blood tests and follow instructions about medicines, food, and infection precautions. Tell the team about fever, bleeding, breathlessness, mouth sores, diarrhoea, or unusual tiredness as soon as these occur.

Keep a current medicine list and ask which symptoms need a same-day call. Do not delay treatment or take over-the-counter medicines without checking, because blood counts and organ function can change during therapy.

Contact your haematology team urgently for fever or chills, bleeding that does not stop, black stools, severe weakness, or signs of infection. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, fainting, or a sudden severe headache.
