How long does chemotherapy take to work for follicular lymphoma?

The exact schedule depends on the medicines, the extent and pace of the lymphoma, previous treatment, and your general health. A scan may be planned after several cycles or at another point chosen by your haematology team. Swollen lymph nodes can shrink at different rates, and feeling better does not by itself prove that treatment has controlled the lymphoma.

Your team may compare lymph-node size, symptoms, blood counts, and sometimes other lymphoma-related findings with results from before treatment. A response can mean that the lymphoma has reduced or become less active; it does not necessarily mean every abnormal cell has disappeared.

Follicular lymphoma can behave differently from one person to another. Results may lead to continuing the planned course, changing medicines, adding another treatment, or monitoring after treatment. The scan date is therefore part of a plan, not a promise that a particular result will occur.

Keep each appointment, take medicines exactly as prescribed, and record fever, new swelling, breathlessness, pain, bowel changes, and changes in energy. Ask which blood tests are needed before the next cycle and when imaging is expected. Do not stop treatment because a node still feels enlarged or because symptoms have improved.

Rest when needed, drink according to the advice you were given, and check before taking non-prescription medicines or supplements. The chemotherapy team can explain infection precautions and how to manage nausea, tiredness, or mouth soreness.

Contact your oncology team promptly for a fever or chills, a new cough, painful urination, uncontrolled vomiting, severe diarrhoea, unusual bleeding, or rapidly worsening weakness. Chemotherapy can lower infection-fighting blood cells, so an illness may need assessment even when symptoms seem mild.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or bleeding that does not stop. Use the emergency number available where you are and tell responders that you are receiving chemotherapy.
