How long does chemotherapy take to work for chronic lymphocytic leukaemia?

Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia affects blood and immune cells, so response may be followed through blood counts, examination of lymph nodes and the spleen, symptoms, and sometimes imaging or other tests. The treatment goal may be to reduce troublesome symptoms, improve blood counts, or control the leukaemia rather than produce an immediate visible change. Early blood results can fluctuate, and a single result may not give the full picture. Your haematology team interprets results across visits and checks whether treatment is causing side effects that need attention.

Attend blood tests on the dates arranged and report fevers, night sweats, unexplained weight change, swollen glands, bruising, or increasing tiredness. Keep a list of medicines, including products bought without a prescription, and ask before receiving a vaccine or starting a supplement during treatment. Ask how quickly results will be reviewed and whether a low blood count changes the next cycle.

Contact the team promptly for a fever, shaking chills, new infection symptoms, breathlessness, chest discomfort, unusual bleeding, widespread bruising, or severe weakness. Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, or difficulty breathing. A lowered white-cell count can make infection more serious, so use the emergency instructions provided by your unit rather than waiting for a routine review.

Ask which blood and examination findings will show that treatment is helping, when those findings will be reviewed, and whether the aim is symptom relief, better counts, or disease control. Discuss what happens if the response is incomplete and which side effects should trigger a same-day call.
