Childhood cancer includes different diseases, so chemotherapy schedules and response checks are tailored to the diagnosis. The team may use an examination, blood counts, scans, or tests of the bone marrow or spinal fluid, depending on the cancer. A child may look or feel better before a test confirms a response, while some treatment effects are not visible from day-to-day behaviour. The team may also consider growth, eating, sleep, play, and school activity when discussing wellbeing, but these observations do not replace medical checks.

Follow the medication and appointment plan, record temperatures and new symptoms, and keep the team updated about eating, drinking, bowel movements, pain, sleep, and mood. Ask what infection precautions apply and how to manage missed doses or vomiting after medicine. Children may not describe symptoms clearly, so changes in behaviour, movement, or usual play can be useful details for the clinical team. Bring questions to the next review rather than trying to interpret a scan at home.

Use the oncology unit’s urgent number for a fever, chills, unusual sleepiness, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, severe pain, new bleeding, or a child who is suddenly much less responsive. Follow the temperature threshold and emergency instructions given by the child’s team, because these can vary with the treatment and blood counts.

Ask when response will be checked, which tests are planned, and what improvement the team is looking for. Clarify which symptoms require an immediate call, how treatment may affect school or activities, and how you will receive results after scans or blood tests.
