How long does chemotherapy take to work for bone cancer?

Chemotherapy may be given before surgery, after surgery, or as part of treatment for cancer that has spread. The number and spacing of cycles depend on the cancer type, its location, the medicines selected, kidney and heart health, blood counts, and the planned operation or other treatment.

Doctors may use scans to assess the bone lesion and any areas elsewhere in the body. They also consider pain, movement, swelling, strength, examination findings, and blood tests. Bone changes can take time to appear clearly, so one symptom or one image is not the whole assessment.

Follow activity and weight-bearing advice from your team, attend laboratory checks, and tell them about increasing pain, a new lump or swelling, reduced movement, numbness, or a fall. Do not change pain medicine or exercise without guidance, particularly when a bone may be weakened.

Side effects cannot tell you whether the tumour is responding. Write down when symptoms occur and whether they affect sleep, walking, eating, or daily tasks; this gives the team useful information at review.

Get urgent help for sudden severe bone pain, a new inability to use a limb, a fall with pain, new weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever, breathing difficulty, or uncontrolled vomiting. These symptoms can signal an infection, fracture, spinal pressure, or another treatment-related problem.

Ask when imaging will be repeated, which changes count as a response, how chemotherapy fits with surgery or radiotherapy, and what symptoms should trigger a same-day call. Ask for clear advice about walking, lifting, pain control, and protecting a vulnerable bone.
