How long does chemical peel take to work for acne?

Peel ingredients can loosen dead cells, reduce pore blockage and improve the surface appearance of some pimples. Mild stinging, redness, dryness or flaking may happen before the area looks better. A peel is not a single cure for every form of acne: deep, painful nodules and acne that is leaving scars may need medical treatment alongside or instead of a peel. New lesions can still appear because acne begins within the follicle.

A clinician should check whether the spots are acne and select the peel accordingly. Use only the cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen recommended for recovery. Do not scratch, wax, scrub or combine the peel with retinoids, benzoyl peroxide or other exfoliants unless your clinician gives clear instructions. Record new breakouts and irritation between visits; this helps determine whether the plan is controlling acne rather than only smoothing the surface.

Tell the clinic about severe burning, swelling, blistering, oozing or a rash spreading beyond the treated area. Prompt review is needed for fever, pus or increasing warmth. Seek dermatology care when acne is painful, deep, rapidly worsening or causing marks, since delaying effective control can increase the chance of lasting change.

Ask what kind of acne you have, when to judge the first response, whether medicines should be paused, and what plan will prevent fresh lesions between peels. Ask how the treatment will be adjusted if irritation or dark marks develop.
