How long does cervical screening test take to work for HPV infection?

HPV is a common virus that can affect the cervix. Screening looks for HPV and, where relevant, cervical cell changes. It cannot tell exactly when an infection began and it is not a treatment for the virus. HPV may be present without symptoms, so a positive result does not explain every symptom or establish that a symptom was caused by HPV.

Some HPV infections are no longer detected over time, while others need repeat testing or closer assessment. The appropriate next step depends on the result, your previous screening history and local clinical guidance.

Have screening at the recommended interval and provide accurate details about prior results, pregnancy and symptoms. Keep the appointment or result message, then follow the stated plan rather than arranging an extra test solely because the result is taking time. Ask whether a repeat sample, examination or specialist assessment is needed if HPV is detected or cells look changed.
