How long does cervical fusion take to work for cervical myelopathy?

Fusion removes movement at the treated level and uses a graft, cage, plate, or screws to maintain alignment while the bones heal together. Decompression may relieve pressure on the spinal cord, but nerves do not always recover immediately once pressure is reduced.

Neck pain and arm pain may change before balance, hand dexterity, stiffness, or walking improve. Some people mainly experience stabilisation, meaning symptoms stop progressing rather than disappear. Recovery is influenced by the duration and severity of cord compression, age, general health, and rehabilitation.

Follow restrictions on lifting, driving, neck movement, and work. Take wound and medication instructions seriously, use the collar if prescribed, and keep follow-up visits so healing and alignment can be checked. Walking in short, safe intervals and therapy for balance or hand function may be introduced when appropriate.

Avoid smoking or nicotine if your surgeon advises this, because fusion requires bone healing. Do not alter exercises or return to contact sport without clearance.

Contact the surgical team for fever, wound drainage, increasing neck swelling, worsening pain, or new swallowing difficulty. Seek urgent care for new or worsening weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening balance. A fall or sudden neck injury also warrants prompt advice.

Ask what improvement is realistic for your cord symptoms, how fusion healing will be checked, when driving and work can resume, which therapy is suitable, and which new symptoms require immediate contact.
