How long does cervical cerclage take to work for preterm labour?

Preterm labour involves contractions and cervical change before the expected time of birth. A cerclage is a stitch around the cervix intended to help it stay closed when cervical weakness contributes to early opening. It works as physical support after placement, rather than as a medicine with a delayed onset.

If contractions, fluid leakage, bleeding or infection are already present, placing or keeping a cerclage may be unsafe. The maternity team will assess the cervix, membranes, contractions and baby before choosing management.

Follow the activity and medication instructions from your maternity team and attend every review. Note the timing of tightening, any fluid or bleeding, and changes in fetal movement. If symptoms begin, call the maternity unit before travelling so the team can prepare an assessment.

Seek urgent maternity care for regular contractions, persistent lower-back pain, pelvic pressure, watery leakage, vaginal bleeding, fever, unusual discharge or reduced fetal movement. Do not wait to see whether the stitch starts working when these symptoms appear.

Ask whether the stitch is suitable in your situation, how contractions would change the plan, which activities are restricted, how the cervix will be monitored, and when removal is expected.
