How long does CAR T-cell therapy take to work for multiple myeloma?

The infused cells are designed to recognise a target on myeloma cells. Their activity and the body’s recovery develop over time, so the first impression is not always the final assessment. The team may monitor symptoms, blood counts, markers linked with myeloma and kidney or calcium results.

Changes in pain, energy or appetite can be useful to report, but they cannot confirm response alone. Your doctors may also use urine testing, imaging or a marrow assessment when appropriate. The schedule depends on your treatment plan and overall condition.

Keep every review, take medicines exactly as prescribed and report reduced drinking, vomiting or new pain. Check your temperature as instructed and avoid contact with people who are unwell. Ask for help with meals, transport and chores during recovery.

Contact the team urgently for fever, confusion, severe dizziness, a seizure, new weakness, chest discomfort or difficulty breathing. Also report persistent vomiting or inability to drink, because dehydration can require prompt treatment.

Ask which myeloma markers will be followed, when the first response review is due and how results affect further treatment. Confirm whom to call overnight and which symptoms mean you should go directly to emergency care.
